Intercollegiate College of Nursing

Clinical Performance & Simulation Lab

Welcome

Suzie Kardong with StudentsSuzan Kardong-Edgren, assistant professor, works with nursing students on a life-sized manikin, which breathes, and has a pulse, heart beat, and lung and bowel sounds.

The Clinical Performance & Simulation Lab provides a supportive environment for students to learn and master nursing skills. Our philosophy of auto-tutorial learning fosters the development of critical thinking. The lab accommodates students by providing unscheduled time for both skills practice and patient-specific preparation. Scheduled time is available for physical assessment classes and clinical groups.

The lab is staffed with two full time, three part time, and supplemental preceptors. All preceptors must have a BSN and clinical experience working as Registered Nurses. The five current preceptors have over 100 cumulative years as RNs. The role of the preceptor is to support student learning by assisting the students with skills practice and developing critical thinking. Preceptors do not have responsibility for formal evaluation of student performance. Behind the scenes the preceptors stay very busy maintaining equipment and updating the skills modules.

Skills Modules have been developed for essential basic as well as advanced nursing skills. They prepare students for practice in the lab by guiding them through each skill using objectives and learning activities such as reading, videos, and Computer Assisted Instruction. All modules are evidence based and are reviewed and updated biannually to reflect changes in nursing practice and research.

The Clinical Performance and Simulation Lab has a wealth of resources and equipment to enhance both student learning and student teaching projects. Equipment includes items such as: simulators, life-size manikins, models, and site-specific I.V. pumps and set-ups. Nursing texts, pamphlets, and posters, as well as policy and procedure manuals for the major clinical sites are maintained within the lab. Resources and equipment are available to use within the lab and also may be checked out during regular academic year semesters. Materials are available to students enrolled at all WSU campuses. Faculty are provided with resources to support clinical and classroom instruction.
