College of Nursing Dean Takes on State and National Leadership Roles

Spokane Wash.: Washington State University Intercollegiate College of Nursing Dean Dorothy Detlor was recently elected President of the Washington Center for Nursing (WCN) and was appointed to the Budget Committee for the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

“It’s a professional honor to be elected and appointed to serve both of these highly respected organizations,” said Detlor. “The opportunity to keep pace with what is affecting nursing education and the nursing profession at the state and the national level will enhance our ability to adapt to those elements at Intercollegiate College of Nursing/WSU College of Nursing.”

The WCN contributes to the health and wellness of Washington state residents by providing information, recruitment and retention resources that support evidence-based decisions about Washington state’s nursing workforce. A newly established not-for-profit organization, WCN is being developed in response to the nursing shortages across the state and nation. The result of intentional work by the leaders of the major nursing organizations in Washington state, the Center will be one of about 15 such centers which have been established in states across the country.

The Center will be housed initially on the Seattle Pacific University campus in Seattle. Detlor is a member of the founding board of directors and began her one-year term as WCN President Jan. 1, 2004.

The CCNE, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is an autonomous agency dedicated to the improvement of the public’s health by ensuring quality and integrity in nursing education. The mission of the CCNE is the accrediting of baccalaureate and graduate nursing education programs (www.aacn.nche.edu/Accreditation/index.htm).

CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices. As a voluntary, self-regulatory process, CCNE accreditation supports and encourages continuing self-assessment by nursing education programs and the continuing growth and improvement of collegiate professional education. Detlor will serve a two-year term on the CCNE Budget Committee ending Dec. 31, 2005.

Established in 1968, the Intercollegiate College of Nursing/WSU College of Nursing is the nation's first, oldest and most comprehensive nursing education consortium. Celebrating 35 years of world class nursing education, the College of Nursing offers baccalaureate, graduate and professional development course work to nursing students enrolled through its four consortium partners: Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Washington State University and Whitworth College. Each year, the college educates more than 650 graduate and upper-division undergraduate students and prepares more entry-level nurses than any other educational institution in the state.
