"Refugee Project/Escape to Freedom” Simulation Offered to Nursing Students and Faculty
WHAT
More than 50 WSU Intercollegiate College of Nursing
students will have the opportunity to see the
“Refugee Project/Escape to Freedom”
simulation. The simulation experience, developed and
administered by World Relief Seattle, is designed to help
students realize some of the hardships endured by
refugees. The simulation transforms Americans into
refugees escaping for their lives.
WHY
The students will be exposed to the views of refugees
through personal experience and role playing. The project
applies directly to cultural competency goals of many
nursing courses including theoretical concepts to
cultural assessment, intercultural communication and
interpretation of behaviors. The “Refugee
Project” simulations will help students understand
the experiences refugees may have and thus, assist them
in understanding and providing culturally competent
nursing care. The idea that health care is global and
what happens internationally affects people in the United
States and around the globe is a central theme.
